Sarah Skerik Reschly
We hired Tompkins to handle fertilization of our newly sodded lawn. Despite being on former ag land with some terrible weeds, we have very few weeds and overall the new lawn looks great.
Provider response
Thank you Sarah. Yes, establishing sodded lawns in sandy soil is difficult for sure. Adding to this was a dry fall season. We have everything completed so you will have a fighting chance next year. We're in your corner!
Rob Smith
Great service, great quality work, great communications, great to work with.
Provider response
Thanks Rob! We can't control anything else in this business other than the work we do and how we communicate, lol. I wish I could control the rain!
Diane Bielanski
We have just started with Tompkins Lawn Care, Inc. having moved to Iowa. They just completed aeration, herbicide treatment, and fertilization. We are very impressed with the professionalism of the staff and their service. They marked our underground dog fence, as agreed, before aeration and applying the other treatments. Before they left, they advised when we should water again, etc.
Provider response
Thank you Diane. Welcome to our area! We are pleased that you chose our service and we look forward to a long lasting relationship. Please, let me know of anything you need. We are happy to offer referrals for other local service providers that may be needed.
Ashley Hicks

These guys are great! Out lawn has never looked better. I also love the ‘bug’ treatment around the outside of our home. Also, Kevin is super response to any questions I have had via email.
Provider response

Josh McKnight
Kevin’s passion for his service is top notch, and his employees are solid as well. Appreciate Kevin’s help and guidance in rejuvenating my lawn.
Provider response
Thanks Josh! It's frustrating how "service" has left business these days..... from crappy meals at restaurants to the absence of "human interaction" in business. We are dedicated to be different, better! Thanks for supporting our effort.
Joe Williams
Absolutely, terrible service from Kevin. He criticized another business and tried to get me to switch. I asked him to do aeration and he came up with every excuse for the need to do more. He left the end of the call by suggesting that he had another appointment. The 32 minute 57 second phone call was spent criticizing people for not taking better care of their lawn and bashed another lawn care company. Absolutely unacceptable!! A little advice, don't bash other people and businesses, just talk about what you do well.
Provider response
Mr. Williams. I'm sorry you were dissatisfied with the information presented and/or how I presented it to you. I've taken the day to reflect on the situation and while you ae entitled to your opinion, I feel it’s in bad taste to review a service business when you have never received service from said business. You reached out to us for an estimate, provided to you in less than an hour. In the information shared within the estimate, I asked to call me so that I can learn more about the current situation/problems and also to learn what has been done previously in regard to general management. I also ask whether there have been prior attempts to remedy the same concerns by another service. In this business (nature, outdoors) there are many variables to consider and often the call to action is based on an incorrect diagnosis by well-intended homeowners. I do tend to ask questions and I'm not afraid to give straight answers. It doesn’t serve our customers to be in anyone's pocket, and I call it like I see it. With respect, there is a big difference between slandering another business and pointing out exactly how they failed. In this example, you told me that another company has serviced your property for ten years. When I asked if the other service ever recommended aeration you said, no, to which I did not hide my surprise. I feel a company charging for sub-par service and not offering the best advice is “absolutely unacceptable”. I also explained why "top-dressing" and "over-seeding" do not work as most people assume and explained how it's best to first focus on "preventing" failures rather than repeatedly reacting to problems, often the result of ineffective management. I was purposeful in saying specifically, I was not trying to upsell you on services but how we must account for prior neglect and the current dry weather conditions. I explained, while aeration is needed, it alone will not offer a quick and noticeable change compared to the addition of fertilizer, needed in such poor soil conditions. I also noted the recent drought conditions and that because you haven’t watered, the ground is very hard and that it may be best to wait. I apologize for my attempt to let you down easy with excuse of an appointment vs a hang up. After offering you 32 minutes and 57 seconds of my time, I simply had enough of saying the same thing. Please remember, you called us for a reason. I responded quickly and took the time to learn about the situation so I could offer the best advice for a safe and effective solution. I'm sorry that my honesty offended you.

We appreciate you Ryan! You always make us look good by keeping the lawn nicely cut. You always do a great job with the aftercare and your property always looks great! It's no wonder why people take note. Thanks for your loyalty and support!
Tony Pelzer
Unfortunately cost is just too high to justify for such a small yard.
Provider response
Hello Tony- <br>I left a voicemail at 6pm last night and asked you to call me so I could address your concerns and look at other options, as we indicated in our estimate. You have not yet responded privately.<br>I'm sorry that you feel the way you do. You have been a valued customer beginning in 2018. You came back to us in 2020 for three more years, through 2023. I apologize if I'm incorrect, I do not recall any complaints throughout this 5 year span. <br>Noting the prior repeat business, I'm sure you've noticed our effort to provide a premium service. Our reputation has been growing for nearly three decades because we are fair, honest and true to our word. As an added perk, our service is effective and we're not only acountable but accessible (I've heard the owner still answers every call!). Of course, all this comes at a price. <br>As such we have had to raise prices overall and your fertilizer treatment increased to $105.00/service over last year's price of $100.00/fertilizer service. Its my promise to provide a good value in an effective and responsible service but it's not my goal to be the cheapest. Honestly, we will charge whatever we need to in order to remain effective, protecting our brand, our reputation. <br>I feel it's unfair to leave a poor review for a service business simply because your opinion is that they are too expensive. You chose our service four times and you knew what to expect for three of those four. A service business is made of people first, than equipment and all the things that travel to your property each month to provide a thorough and professional service. The same as you experienced for four seasons. It's much different than ordering something on-line only to learn after receiving, the photos of the thing are a lot nicer than the thing itself. <br>As a small business owner who takes pride in what they do, and my staff who back that up every day, I'm sorry you feel our price is too expensive but wish you all the best.<br><br>Sincerely,<br>Kevin Tompkins<br>Tompkins Lawn Care, Inc.<br>(319)331.9357

Tompkins Lawn Care has been phenomenal to work with. Professional, responsive, educational and they have my yard looking the best it has ever looked!!! Kevin, the owner, cares a great deal and that is passed to his team. I have never used a lawn service before but everyone on the block is asking what happened and how it happened so fast. The results are incredible!! Steve D.
Provider response
Thank you Steve. We are pleased that you are happy with our service and we are thankful for your business. I may be the owner but the credit goes to my staff. We will continue to do our best for you and others while remaining focused on our core values and other attributes that further separate us from the rest.

We had been customers for 8 years and had always been thrilled with our lawn's appearance. In addition to lawn care, we have a large ash tree in the front yard we began using Tompkins to apply treatments in order to prevent Emerald Ash Bore. Over the last 2 years, the tree started showing early leaf dropping in late summer and overall thinning of leaves compared to the next door neighbors' 3 Ash trees so we had a tree specialist come take a look. The tree expert told us we should only be treating the tree every 2-3 years and the likely cause of our tree health was due to over-treatment of pesticides. Upon checking my records we realized Tompkins had sent us the same email approximately every 10 months stating, "It's been 2 years since your last treatment against Emerald Ash Bore. These treatments need to continue now for effective control [...] we intend to continue this treatment unless otherwise notified." I confirmed continuing treatment from Tompkins upon receipt of each of these emails. As soon as I realized this error, I sent an email letting Tompkins know they were sending communications that were incorrect as well as accepting responsibility for not double-checking my records prior to confirming treatment. My main concern was to make sure they did not treat our tree again this year which would have been the 4th treatment in less than 4 years. I received a quick response which I thought was a good sign, but when my husband called Mr. Tompkins to discuss, it was clear Mr. Tompkins did not want to hear our concerns, but wanted to alleviate any possible liability he had for treating the tree. He blamed me for not realizing they were sending mass email messages, claimed their company couldn't possibly keep track of all their customers to know when each tree should be treated, claimed there were hundreds of reasons a tree could lose it's leaves early... again all to absolve himself of any wrong-doing and never accepting fault for the inaccurate emails. We mistakenly put our trust in a lawn care company to be the experts they are paid to be. This company made it clear they are not capable or willing to keep track of services in order to apply the right treatment at the right time. We now know we were wrong to trust Tompkins and were wrong to think the owner would want to know about a customer concern or take any ownership for inaccuracies in their customer communications. I would not recommend working with this company as you are nothing more than a check in his pocket. If you ever have an issue with his service, save yourself the time and energy and don't bother letting him know.
Provider response
Ms. Swartz I'm sorry that you feel the way you do, nothing I say will change that. I feel it's unfair that you bring this to a public forum with only some of the pertinent and important information to simply cast an unflattering light on me and my company. You stated very clearly in your review that you have always been thrilled with your service, yet now I am being deemed as someone who doesn't care about his business and his customers.I find it odd that I receive emails and reviews from you but have only had a dialogue with your husband, I feel as if misinterpretation has resulted in the current situation that otherwise could have been cleared up with direct communication.<br>Lets start by recognizing that you have been a customer for 8 years and by your own admission you had "always been thrilled with your lawns appearance"....thank you for recognizing that as we work hard to provide these results/experiences to all of our customers. Secondly, I think it's important to mention that your money has been returned as your husband requested. I did this despite being cursed at and called names by phone.<br>You first emailed me July 22nd explaining you were upset because we didn't double check timing of the services you ordered, making sure the schedule met the *minimum requirement for control. I immediately responded with a request to speak by phone. Your husband called back and my immediate reply was an apology for the oversight on our part, not noticing the treatment was done the prior year. I explained that our attempts to be proactive vs reactive when scheduling treatments require mass emails to reach many customers well in advance of service, leaving time to coordinate an effective approach. You refer to the language in our "reminders" to be suggestive but it's important to note that in past eight years of service there have been many types of notices delivered and the language has changed depending on the year or the immediacy service in question. In the end, these "notes" are to bring a concern to light with hope that we can communicate a plan of action before it's too late. I apologized for not double checking the frequency of the service you ordered.<br>The most important thing to consider is that the two year treatment cycle we recommend for EAB is the *minimum frequency suggested for control not the maximum. Of hundreds of thousands of trees injected I would think there to be known problems if frequency of treatments exceeded the minimum. Surely, you can understand the high probability of multiyear injections occuring when properties are bought and sold. I explained to your husband that I spoke with the company rep regarding your concerns and asked that he consider trees (especially ash) are presenting signs of drought stress as the most common issue from year to year. I explained that there are simply too many variables that affect trees for a person to presume anything upon simply looking at a tree. If, it is proven to be affected by fault of ours, I will of course compensate you. Our work is guaranteed and I am well insured.<br>Much effort goes into customer service with quick and straight forward answers to questions or concerns.Unfortunately they may be answers that not everyone likes or wants to hear. I am almost always available by phone and my email account is cleared out daily but despite my effort we can't work both sides all the time. I can't offer an answer if the question is never asked. In the one instance you did ask me to check your frequency/schedule I did and we did not provide service. As mentioned, your money has been refunded as requested and we are here to answer any additional questions you may have.
