Mosquito Control District

In the summer they used to spray with the truck every evening and the plane or helicopter flew by almost every morning. Now your lucky if they drive by 2 or 3 times a week, and that's probably because someone in the neighborhood called. Do we need to call everyday for them to do their job? Where is the money going?

Like most Florida State Parks, Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park is a wonderful place... that could be even better if it were adequately staffed. It is easily the most peaceful natural place one can go in the entire Village of Islands (a.k.a. the City of Islamorada). Most of the park visitors that stop here would love a guided walk with a knowledgeable Park Ranger, or even with a qualified, and well-trained volunteer. But Florida's State Parks can't add positions as needed; creating a new position requires legislative authorization. Even the park's nature center was closed. Surely that one-room interpretive facility could have been safely opened to some limited number of people (wearing their masks) at a time, and still been safe for visitors and staff. Thankfully, the restrooms were apparently safe to open. Despite Florida's steadily increasing population and tourism, the state's congress and recent Governors have kept the Florida Park Service on a starvation budget, with too few staff and salaries that are embarrassingly low (and make it hard to retain the best staff). Show this park a little love by doing it this very big favor: find (or ask for) one of the "Park Report Card" mailable forms (they should be on the brochure rack, but the supply sometimes runs out). Please, fill one out and mail it in. Do this at EVERY park you visit. Do it EVERY time you go. Send a copy of your thoughts to Governor DeSantis. And, if you are a Floridian, please send a copy to your elected State Representative. My thoughts on March 28 were: the. 1. The place really needs interpretive guides. Not even one was available (on 3/28/2021), the date that was the very peak of this year's tourist season. 2. If adequate staffing is not an option, WiFi guided tours could cover non-moveable points of interest, such a geology and botanical features. 3. This park's long nature trails need more trailside benches where one can sit and watch as the critters resume what they were doing before they heard you coming. 4. One or or more places in the park that offered seating AND a roof would be nice, both as a bit of protection from a passing rain-storm or as a seat out of the intense sun. That's enough for this one visit, but I'll have more next time.
